Soaring Hamster
25G
creature - hamster
whenever Soaring hamster attacks or blocks you lose the game.

Well it all depends on how you use it in different combo's. the cards that were made in the older editons, the power nines are very very rare and hard to get so you can't really play with them alot so it evens out. you have a bigger chance to get a good card out of apocalypse then to get a good card out of beta
(all in consideration to the more powerful cards of that editon of course)

Yet ah! why should they know their fate?

And happiness too swiftly flies."
Thought would destroy their paradise.
No more; where ignorance is bliss,
'Tis folly to be wise."

well box of betta will cost you like 1500-2000$! and box of any late expension like 70-100$
in beta box i'll get from 2-4 P9 cards and lots of usless commons.i can even get a lase (5$ rare in best case)
lets do math i can buy 20-30 boxes of apoc (for example) well lets see where i get better cards. hmmm... i gues in late expansion.

Well acctualy, you really can't say the old cards are stronger then new cards because it also depends on your opnnent. if you play t1 against another player thats playing t1, then the cards are no stronger, only if ur playing t1 against t2 then you see the difference
(though no t2 deck can stand against a well built t1 deck, ones that can win on seconed-third turn with the right combo and that use for of wills)

little example of what WOTC doing with strong and weak cards,
fire breathing is much weaker than croun of flames, and ansestral recall is much stronger than braingaizer, so you can't say whatis stronger each set has it's own weak and strong cards, p9 is not that stron the cost alot because of theire rarity.

What many of you are missing is the fact that you can't compare a lightning bolt to a shock, by saying that if they cost the same, and one of them does more, then it's better. That's the wrong logic. The right logic would be to examine a card's overall influence on the ENVIRONMENT FOR WHICH IT WAS DEISGNED. That's the relative power of the card. Take an extreme case, I have a new set, made for T2, which consists of tons of creatures with toughness 1. And I have a sorcery card, in the same set, which costs 2 red mana and does 1 damage to every creature. Clearly that card is inferior to Pyroclasm, but the point is that in that specific environment, this card is much better than pyroclasm ever was. It's not about the power of the card, it's about the relative power of the card. That's why Cursed Scroll, in my opinion, was a much stronger card in T2, then any mox ever was in T1, and im not even talking about Tempest Cycle tournies, in those they banned the Scroll, something which never took place when it came to a mox

Timaway :
You are right, to an extent. The card's influence should be examined in relation to the enviroment in which it is played.
However, there are some cards that will always be better than others. Lightning Bolt will always be stronger than Shock, merely because it has more effect (if only by 1 point of damage). Crown of Flames will always be better than Firebreathing, because it is more flexible.
You can try to compare the usefulness of Rancor and Giant Strength (Rancor is played in Extended Stompy, while Giant Strength will probably see play in sealed). In sealed, the Strength is probably better than the Rancor.
So, like you said, some cards have to be measured by their effect on the enviroment. But other cards will always be better than others.
Just my two cents :>
